Food recovery pyramid

Food Product

We at Chalkpiece decided to take up the issue of food waste and bring up a notable change regarding that. As food is being wasted majorly everyday, we decided to make a “Food recovery pyramid” and make people aware about it, and how it can help in the reduction of food waste. So in regards to all the given points we decided to organize a food waste workshop using design as a tool.

Introduction to design

Our first task was to introduce all the kids to design, make it known to them what design actually is? and how we can use it. We asked all the 6 students to make a birthday gift for a friend using feel image do share activity. The theme of our project was “Feel, Imagine, Do and share”!

Problem Statement

Our problem statement which was given to each student was to understand how we can achieve zero food waste? and what can be done to achieve it?
Waste Segregation
Design Thinking approach
Waste Awareness
Door Campaign
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Demonstrating the model

FEEL

As the first word of our theme goes on to say “Feel” we emphasized the students to have an empathy state towards the topic given and then represent it with an introduction about the process of getting food from farm to plate. Our main focus was to teach students how difficult it is to bring food from the farm to the plate, thus teaching them to value even a little morsel of food. Children were handed over with cards with a step by step process explaining the procedure of the farm to the plate. We then asked the participants to write the process about it individually using their own minds in a creative way. This helped the children not only to be empathetic and value food but also brought forth awareness in their minds with regards to food wastage, and how farmers work etc

Imagine

In the second round we gave the children the task to imagine and choose any festival and make a list of food that is prepared in each. Through this round we wanted to see how creative a child’s mind can get, and also emphasize how food varies in different occasions and different cultures.

DO

Just as the name suggests “Do” in this round we gave the task of creating an actual model of the list of food items that the children listed in the Imagine stage. The main motive of this round was to put into paper a child’s imagination and create a successful solution to the problem statement. For eg. If kids have imagined and listed a leaf, they then have to actually create a leaf and name the item.

Share

In this final round we taught the students how to create a food pyramid of the items they created in each stage, making them understand fully as to how we can split our food waste approximately that will lead to zero wastage of food. This final round was to share our ultimate message of how food wastage is such a issue and how through the help of a food pyramid we can reduce it. To our surprise all the 6 children who participated in our workshop created beautiful food pyramids of their creative ways to stop food wastage.

Our Solution

So as a solution to our food wastage mission our kids made a food pyramid showcasing the food structure and how we can achieve the goal of food reduction. Starting with landfill, then composition, industrial uses all the food wastes from such places can thus be feed to animals. On top of our pyramid is to feed the hungry people, all the leftover food without being thrown out can actually be fed to the homeless and hungry people down the streets. In this way even the hungry are being fed and food wastage is reduced.

Workshop on food waste

Conclusion

So in conclusion our food project was a success as our motive was primarily achieved. All the six students from sumaithangi trust were very enthuastic and very open to learning, Chalkpieace aims at teaching little children and students all over, the new era of design eduaction with a touch of society’s morals and values. Through this project our children had a keen understanding of how we can actually reduce the wastage of food and also help many people around us, and thus bring forth a change. Therefore design can actually help in reducing food wastage if rightfully used. Also this project will encourage the kids to use and amplify a design thinking approach to their lifes.
